Microdermabrasion: machine versus physical exfoliation --
differences and benefits

Microdermabrasion in an esthetics office is a mini procedure that involves the skin being "sandblasted" by aluminum oxide crystals, baking soda, salt or corn cob granules to remove the stratum corneum (top) layer of the skin while stimulating new skin growth. When the outer cells are removed, fresh and new skin comes forth naturally, and your complexion improves noticeably. Microdermabrasion encourages the production of a new underlying skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which further improves your skin's appearance offering results of a younger looking complexion.

This treatment cleans pores as well as hinders future breaks outs when used on a regular basis. If you have or have had acne, discolorations, superficial lines and wrinkles, uneven texture or sun damaged skin -- you may be a candidate for machine Microdermabrasion. If you've spent too much unprotected time in the sun without being concerned about the damage to your skin it was causing until it was too late, microdermabrasion can help lessen the visible signs of that too.

If you've taken really good care of your skin and that isn't a concern, age catches up with us all. Do you see the beginning of crow's feet around your eyes? Are you starting to see some feathering around your lips? Do you have that crease in your forehead that makes it seem as though you are frowning at times when you aren't? Microdermabrasion, can improve all these things! In addition, it's also a very quick and practically pain free procedure often described like a cat licking the face or like a scrub on steroids.

When a treatment is completed, you see the softer, suppler, younger looking layers that were hiding beneath. The results received from a microdermabrasion treatment by machine can be impressive especially during a series as repeated treatments provide cumulative improvement. Each treatment takes about 30 minutes and six to eighteen microdermabrasion treatments at one to three week intervals are recommended for optimal results. The cost of machine microdermabrasion in a series can be as low as $65 for the face and neck when booked in a series of six.

Microdermabrasion in a jar is also a beneficial way to keep the skin looking smooth, bright, stimulated and hydrated. The benefits of regular home microdermabrasion scrubbing performed 5-7 minutes for face and neck at three times per week provide approximately 60% of the benefits of the machine from a surface texture perspective. While the collagen and elastin benefits are 40% compared to the machine when performed by a professional --- these numbers make at home --- microdermabrasion in a jar important to this esthetician for most people age 35 and up. Great microdermabrasion scrubs are in the price range of $35-65 for 2 ounces.
